Gianni Versace was an Italian fashion designer. He was the founder of Versace but also designed costumes for theatre and films. He was assassinated in July 1997, at only 51 years old. Versace’s first independent collection was in 1972 called “Florentine Flowers”. Versace was also one of the first designers to use leather during 1974, when he presented his first collection made up of leather clothing. Versace was said to be strongly influenced by ancient Greek history as well as Andy Warhol. His first boutique was opened in 1978 in Milan’s Via della Spiga.

Fall 1991 Ready-to-Wear

This piece shows Versace’s ability to take something that would otherwise overly minimilistic and bring it alive by adding stunning hand-sewn embellishment . He manages to do so whilst keeping the look sleek and lusturous.

This piece (apart of the same collection as the previous) shows the sexiness of a woman through a suit, pairing it well with sheer, black tights, thigh-high embellished boots and dark, sultry eye makeup. This helps keep the femininity. The pop of colour on the bra draws attention, making the piece and the woman who wears it immediately appear more sensuous and seductive.

Fall 1991 Ready-to-Wear

Two pieces from one of Versace’s collections in 1991 resembles a dress that cameback in the Spring 2020 Ready-to-Wear collection pictured below. So far keeping in trend with the brand’s ability to manipulate black into making those who wear it be automatically percieved as compelling and dominant at the same time as sexy.

Spring 1993 Ready-to-Wear

This outfit is a full immersion patterns. Versace takes verious different contrasting patterns and blocks them with one another yet managing to keep the piece cohesive by keeping a strict black-and-white colour scheme. This piece was made to be a statement, (the pairing of the large, long-hanging, gold pendant contributes to this theme) suggesting that the women of the time were to start - as well as should start - to make statements, just as the company itself was doing.
