10 Things from a semester in New York

16/12/2023

Congrats to everyone who survived their first semester at college. While waiting for my flight back home I thought I would reflect with you all about 10 things I have learnt from my first semester in New York. And although I am far from a new yorker I do think I am less deulisonal than I have been.

1. WALK. Walk everywhere if possible it is amazing exercise in a city it is also the easiest way to get around most of them time. I have walked across and down New York and can say I know it far better than before however the grid system does help a lot. The best places to walk remain to be the high line and Hudson river park.

2. The Subway. It is not scary, the subway in New York while in my opinon dirtier than London it tends to run pretty efficently. I have become familar with the one line which runs down 7 Ave. However, my tips on the Subway would be don't ride alone after 12am and avoid empty carriages.

3. One Doller pizza. Food after a night out is esstainal when your dining hall is as terrible as mine, however beware of the one doller pizza while some of it is wonderful and cheap. I have been fooled before and food poisoning is never enjoyable.

4. Restaurants. The food in new york is amazing that there is no denying, so here are a few of my favourite places so far. La Pecora Blanca – Pasta, Wonjo – Korean BBQ / K town, Thursday Kitchen Korean – east village. So if you are ever in NY try to check them out and I intend to try more places next semester.

5. Travel. While being in NY I have travelled upstate to Albany and to Boston therefore I have experienced the terrors of travelling on greyhound buses and the toll of Amtrak. However, the trains from Penn do run smoothly and are relatively comfy. I do recommend bus travel to Boston though it is often delayed and you do get suck in traffic it is 1/3 the cost of a train.

6. Free Events. New York is a people city there is almost always an event happening somewhere I went to a halloween dog parade, a Sour themed pop up shop and tried to sneak into a show during fashion week. What I am trying to say is that New York is a hot spot and if you look you can almost definitely find something to do.

7. Clubs and Parties. While is this is not my area of expertise, clubbing as a girl in New York is very easy promoters will buy your tickets, tables and drinks to make the club look good. Personally I have been the The Palace and Blonde and I have really enjoyed it. College parties are more uncommon in a city like NY but there are Frat parties which are okay and can be fun however this is a big maybe. Next semester I will be looking for more bars. But overall NY is a very fun city to a be a college girl.

8. Sample Sales. This is one of my favourite things about New York 260 sample sales mean you can buy designer  clothes for over half price off. The best this semester was a very fortunately timed Rag and Bone sale which helped my get amazing gifts for my dad and brother. A pair of $300 jeans for just $50. New York is very good at sales so keep an eye out.

9. Times Square. AVOID under no circumstances should anyone go to time square I would equate an evening around time square to torture. It is busy and filled with thief's overall I would never go more than once if you can avoid it.

10. ENJOY IT. Living in New York these past few months has truly been a blessing and while this city of dreams can be lonely sometimes I have really enjoyed my time here and I am very exited to the years to come. Christmas in New York is a memory I will never forget and I highly recommend everyone experience it. Go to the MET the Moma, go to every event and the make the most of being a city than never sleeps.
